Pediatric cardiology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of heart problems that may have been identified before birth, after birth, or developed later in childhood. Pediatric cardiologists treat all congenital heart defects even if they are not detected until adulthood. We use a variety of diagnostic equipment and techniques to test and treat your child. Fetal cardiology focuses on the study of the structure and function of your baby’s heart before birth. Pregnant women at increased risk of giving birth to a baby with congenital heart disease will typically be referred to a trained pediatric cardiologist to have a fetal echocardiogram performed. This test uses sound waves (ultrasound) to study the structure of the heart. While not all heart abnormalities are detectable prenatally, a fetal echocardiogram can identify a number of heart conditions. Your obstetrician can refer you to our office if it is believed that you are at risk.
